Tudor House, Langport   Grade II

The SBPT's first restoration

During the 18th  and 19th and, to a lesser extent, early 20th Century, Langport was a busy and prosperous trading centre, with merchant ships coming up the River Parrett from the Bristol Channel to dock and unload cargo at Langport's Great Bow Wharf. 

Tudor House was built in the late 18th century by a Langport merchant who, according to the records, never lived in the house but let it to others.  The house stands in a prominent position in the High Street and, having passed through many hands, by the 1980s the house, although still occupied, was in a poor state of repair.  The SBPT decided to buy and restore it as an example of what could be done with other domestic buildings of a similar age.

The SBPT was fortunate to find a sympathetic architect, structural engineer, quantity surveyor and contractor to tackle the work and this became a key objective in all subsequent projects. 

The work was completed in 1991 and Tudor House is now a comfortable private house again.
