The Somerset Building Preservation Trust
The Somerset Building Preservation Trust works to save the architectural heritage of Somerset for YOU and the nation as a whole. Historic buildings that would otherwise be lost through dilapidation and neglect are restored. They are then converted into a variety of uses - a tithe barn into a community hall, some 16th century almshouses into social housing, an 18th century Congregational Chapel into an area for the local community to enjoy exhibitions …… and much more. The latest project is the restore Castle House (Grade 1 listed), which comes within the curtilage of Taunton Castle for which very generous funding of £330,000 has already been received from Viridor Credits - this comes under the landfill tax credits scheme.

Last year our members enjoyed visits to a glorious Georgian house near Somerton, which is in the process of being restored. We then visited the restored Merchant's House in the centre of Shepton Mallet, which last year won a coveted William Stansell/SBPT Building Award. Our AGM was held at Hestercombe Gardens in the beautifully restored Bampfylde Hall. We were treated to a superb, illustrated talk by Marion Mako on "Scientists, Industrialists and One-upmanship in the Quantocks - gardens of Somerset and their hidden buildings". Marion has worked with Professor Timothy Mowl on their new book, to be published in May 2010, titled Historic Gardens of England: Somerset. After lunch Philip White, Chief Executive of Hestercombe Gardens Trust, escorted members around the historic barn and mill, currently being restored.
